NARCh Player Magazine Hits Stands (by Richard Graham, www.inlinehockeycentral.com) May 15, 2000—The first issue of NARCh Player magazine has hit the rinks, and the opinions printed inside are certain to be provocative in the inline hockey world. Evolved from NARCh Illustrated magazine, which was largely photo-based, NARCh Player magazine is the brainchild of NARCh partner Jeff Mason, who doubles as the magazine's publisher. Packed with profiles of players, teams, coaches and industry insiders, NARCh Player is not afraid to take a stand. According to an editorial by Mason, "One mistake that a lot of magazines make is that they try to be everything to everyone. We won't make that mistake." NARCh Player's opinions certainly won't be appreciated in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the home of USA Hockey and USA Hockey InLine. One of the publication's first shots is taken at ice coaches who prohibit their players from playing inline hockey, in an article called "A Crossover Conspiracy." At the end of the article is an in-your-face challenge to USA Hockey InLine: "Ice hockey coaches are discouraging or outright threatening kids not to play roller hockey. Question: What National Governing Body is in charge of ice hockey? Answer: USA Hockey. Question: How can USA [Hockey] InLine expect our support in the face of this reality? Answer: They can't." NARCh Player boasts the superb photography of Ross Dettman, who shot every image in the magazine. Edited by Steve Filmer, it also includes coverage of the 1999 NARCh Finals and the 2000 NARCh Winternationals, previously published on the NARCh web site; then-and-now photos of top NARCh players; and an anonymously written "NARCh Undercover" column. The column's first topic is relatively tame—the steps teams can take in securing sponsorship from manufacturers. We're guessing that future columns are likely to be more inflammatory. Coming in at a hefty 116 pages (including covers), the premiere issue of NARCh Player is an impressive package with an editorial slant that will please NARCh's fans and anger its detractors. In that sense, it's the Theoren Fleury of inline hockey magazines. Subscriptions to the quarterly publication are available for $29.95 per year. To subscribe, send a check or money order to NARCh Player, 3830 Broadway #35, Boulder, CO 80304. Subscribers will also receive a NARCh Player T-shirt with their first issue. |
